“At the cliffs”
36′ x 24′
Oil on stained wood panel
I wanted to paint something that would have a modern feel despite a very traditional stylistic approach, so this painting is painted on an espresso colour stained wood board with a modern, non-toxic alternative to the traditional Maroger medium.
The painted panel looks smooth, even and glossy, while maintaining the texture of the essential brush strokes.
The composition makes your eye wander in circles. Drawn to the figure in the red coat your glance will involuntarily follow it’s pointing finger to the nearing storm on the right. Naturally the eyes will follow the vibrant current, that I glazed in many layers of paint and medium, back to the cliffs and up to the person in red.
The person looks like he holds his arms outstretched, maybe ready to jump. At second glance we see that it is only his scarf in the wind and that he is actually pointing at the rising storm clouds. But do we know this person? Why are we on a different plateau? Is he warning us and if so, then what of…?
…for me this painting conveys a special kind of atmosphere.
