Trio of canvases à 11′ x 11′
Oil on partly treated raw linen canvas.
I read up on the old Dutch Masters and their style of painting. Not only were they so skilled in their art, making the paints for itself was incredibly challenging at the time. Rembrandt for example would buy rare stones like ultramarin and then use the mill his father co-owned to grind them into a fine powder that would later make his blue paint.
With this trio of windmills I would like to pay tribute to these painters and the work they went through. To resemble the burlap sacks that would be used in these mills at the time I chose to only partly treat the canvas and leave the sides a beautiful warm raw linen that is an exciting contrast to the sanded and smooth part of the canvas that is painted on.
